Festival of Christmas Music and Readings kicks off holiday season

Laidlaw Hall was filled with the joyous sounds of holiday music as the senior wind ensemble and the Prep and Upper School choirs performed in the Festival of Christmas Music and Readings on Sunday, Nov. 27.

Our UCC musicians and singers were fantastic, including flutist Jerry Jia in Form 5 who accompanied the Prep choir in “On a Starlit Night” and Andrew Ma in Form 6 who sang beautifully in the processional carol “Once in Royal David’s City.”

UCC students win prizes at hackathons

The hacking craze continues at Upper Canada College, and its students are showing they’re very skilled at it.

After Simon Guo earned UCC’s first Major League Hacking point and received an award at a hackathon last month, the Grade 10 student acted as a mentor to help two less experienced hackers at Cipher Hack in Brampton, Ont. on Saturday.

UCC students place first and second in Mandarin contest

Upper Canada College boarding students placed first and second at the “Panda Cup” Chinese Speech Contest held by the Chinese Consulate-General in Toronto and the Chinese Culture and Education Society of Canada.

Grade 11 student Valentine Liu placed first and won $300 while Grade 10 student Billy Shi was right behind him and received $200. They topped more than 50 students from other Ontario schools in giving speeches on the topic “China and I” to highlight Chinese culture and history.

UCC Foundation welcomes three new members

The UCC Foundation’s annual general meeting was held on Nov. 23, where Richard Wernham, Vik Rao ’88 and Doug Guzman were thanked for their contributions.

Wernham, the father of Nick Wernham ’02, has been a UCC Foundation board member since 2008 and finished his final term. He’s been a UCC Foundation investment committee member and served as chair of the investment committee from 2009 to 2013. The Richard Wernham and Julia West Centre for Learning is named after him and his wife.

True West was the first play of the year in the UCC-BSS co-curricular program. From the stellar performances, to the excellent stage design and overall production, it was an impressive night of theatre by any measure.

UCC claims fourth straight CISAA varsity football title

Upper Canada College’s varsity hockey team claimed the title of the Barrow Tournament that it hosts annually for the sixth straight year over the weekend.

“The boys played fiercely and selflessly, displaying amazing skill, perseverance and character,” says Blues assistant coach Nick Morris.
