Daring to step up is theme of Founder’s Dinner

Upper Canada College’s Founder’s Dinner is a time to look back at Sir John Colborne and his efforts in launching the school in 1829, but this year’s edition also looked ahead to some of the challenges facing Canada and the potential leadership role the College can play in overcoming them.

People began slowly filing in to the Upper School on Feb. 11 and were greeted by the sounds of the Prep Senior Band in the Bernick Family Foyer before making their way into the student centre.

Edward Snowden addresses historic World Affairs Conference

What a sight it was. More than 900 student delegates from Ontario’s private and public schools packed into Laidlaw Hall, along with a complete cross-section of Canada’s national broadcast and print media. Reporters camped out in the aisles and the back pews, camera and laptops poised. Hundreds more community members and parents were ushered into the Upper School’s old gym, the overflow room, bringing the audience close to 1,300 strong.

UCC welcomes new governors

Upper Canada College has welcomed three new members and reappointed a fourth to its board of governors. Todd Hargarten, Loewe Lee ’99 and Alexander Younger ’89 are the new additions, while Ken Tanenbaum is returning for another term.

Todd Hargarten is managing director and global head of sales and origination for the equity derivatives group and head of prime brokerage and securities lending at TD Securities. He chairs the parents annual giving committee for the UCC Fund and is a member of the College’s advancement committee. Hargarten and his wife Sarah have a son at UCC, Adam ’20, as well as daughters Tess and Laine.

Loewe Lee ’99 is managing director of National Electronics Holdings Limited and its various subsidiaries, including National Properties Holdings Limited

Why give? For UCC parents Chris and Jane Boyle every gift counts

Chris and Jane Boyle know how to Think Ahead.

The Boyles, whose son Wilson is in Year 1, came forward last year with a generous $10,000 gift in support of the Think Ahead Campaign. With impact top of mind, they asked the College to direct their contribution to the school’s area of greatest need. In the end, renovations to the Upper School’s Intermediate Division came out on top.

Urinetown, The Musical is a big hit

Urinetown, The Musical opened Wednesday, Jan. 28 and ran for four amazing shows at the Bishop Strachan School theatre. It was a joint production of Upper Canada College, The York School and BSS.
