A-Day wrap-up: Victory is declared

“Victory” was in the air at Upper Canada College on Sept. 26, as it was the theme of a Think Ahead fundraising campaign announcement and what a dozen school teams experienced over rivals as part of the 36th annual Association Day.

A warm and sunny A-Day began in the Prep School’s Weston Hall at 7:45 a.m. with the new parent breakfast, where families got a chance to meet others in the same position as them while being introduced to members of the school administration along with parent co-chairs Barbara Bottini and Liza Murrell, Old Boy chair Zach Schwartz ’05 and Association Council president Alexander Younger.

The Blue Army then led a parade of Prep boys up the avenue to the front steps of the Upper School, where many of those same people and others from the community officially kicked off the proceedings.

Playbill wall pays tribute to Prep theatre tradition

It’s an incredible testament to the longstanding tradition of theatrical achievement at the Prep. Behind Weston Hall, you’ll now find a collection of programs and playbills from memorable theatrical productions. They date back to 1934, when first Prep play was performed.

“Our objective was to showcase both how active theatrical arts are at the Prep today, and how they’ve been integral for so long,” says Chantal Kenny, executive director of admissions and one of the three co-organizers of the project. She collaborated with archivist Jill Spellman and Prep parent Astrid Player. Former head of the Prep and Upper School Don Kawasoe initiated the project’s funding before he left last June.

“5K Challenge” resurrects former cross-country race

A cross-country race run by Upper Canada College boys from 1899 to 2006 was brought back last year and held again on Sept. 25 in conjunction with the Terry Fox School Run.

“Last year David Crawford, who coaches with me, decided that it would be a good idea to take Terry Fox Day — where theoretically we’re supposed to be running 5K — and resurrect this great College tradition,” says UCC cross-country team head coach Fiona Marshall.
